This vibrant oil painting was created outside during the Summer of 2025.
While reading about ocean life, I was fascinated to learn that the seahorse is the only creature where the male experiences pregnancy. The female transfers her eggs to him, and he self-fertilises them in his pouch. Gestation time varies from 2 to 4 weeks. The eggs get oxygen and food from Dad.
Like us mothers, the male seahorse endures contractions while giving birth. Labour can last up to 12 hours, and the male can produce as many as 2000 babies!
Another interesting fact: seahorses have a very basic digestive system that lacks a stomach. They have long snouts, and consume food slowly. Seahorses must eat constantly to stay alive.
Ocean Pop is oils on canvas. In some cultures, ‘Pop’ means Dad. The title is a play on words. Watch this video to see what I mean.
