Plastic nets (upcycling)

,
I am holding a bright yellow net filled with lemons. It has a plastic tag attached.

This material frays. Most nets found on fruit and vegetables are plastic-laden.

Worldwide, microplastics seep into the water and land. They are lethal to human and animal health.

As part of my ongoing project, I am experimenting with how to use nets as an art material.

I am holding whte and purple coloured nets, used to wrap garlic and other food that is sold in supermarkets.

This process is difficult. The feeling of some nets gives me the creeps.

One idea I had was to make coils. As I sewed lengths of plastic together by hand, conical shapes emerged organically. They could be part of a futuristic costume, but I don’t expect Madonna’s design team will be looking for me any time soon!
