About Imago

This artwork was drawn by hand and painted in oils. I also added tiny pieces of paper collage to create texture. Each layer took a while to dry, and there are five layers in total. I waited almost a year for ideal piece of fabric turned up to use as hanging loops. The circles on the material are like a butterfly’s ocelli (also known as eye spots). I sewed everything together by hand.

For insects, adulthood is known as the imaginal. The phase —also known as the imago— is when a butterfly is sexually mature. It is the only period when the creature has functional wings.

Millions of plastic yoga mats are added to landfill or incinerated annually. Although I’ve been using mats made from natural materials for a few years, I’m still interested in experimenting with ways of keeping stuff out of landfill by transforming it into art.

Please note that I am not available to lead yoga classes. After ten years I stopped teaching to focus on my writing and other things.
